And while many would cite Resident Evil as the originator of this formula, the fact is that the lot of these games took theirblueprint from a PC game, Infogrames’ H.P. Lovecraft-inspired Alone in the Dark. Resident Evil 2 is no exception, following the familiar formula of suspense achieved through changing perspective and cinematic camera angles. Its PC lineage may explain why Resident Evil 2 makes a successful jump from the PlayStation, but only if you can accept some decidedly foreign design conventions inherent to console games.

Resident Evil 2 begins shortly after the first one ended. Raccoon City has been overrun by the zombies created by the unscrupulous Umbrella corporation. While the heroes of the first game are absent from the story-driven portion of Resident Evil 2, www.muhammadniaz.net you still have your choice of two characters. Actually, it isn’t much of a choice. To finish the game, you must play through each section as both characters.
Most of Resident Evil 2 takes place in the Raccoon City Police Station, where both Leon and Claire have taken refuge from the zombie infestation. Inside, you’ll solve a variety of puzzles, which mostly involve finding keys to unlock previously inaccessible areas. The puzzles are simple, and you’ll find yourself sliding blocks onto pressure plates and fitting medallions into their resting places. Likewise, the action, while graphic in content, is somewhat on the light side. You just point your character in the general vicinity of a zombie and fire your weapon.
Neither of these points is a criticism. Resident Evil 2 is an action/adventure that puts emphasis on neither. Instead, its strength is its atmosphere. The game is both creepy and, at times, frightening. The creature designs are good, as there are both gory scenes of zombies feasting on victims, and startling moments of creatures jumping out of nowhere.
The translation from the PlayStation is good. The character models are high resolution, though the backgrounds are a bit washed out. The movies, though well rendered, are somewhat grainy, but look better than those in other console ports like Final Fantasy VII. The PC version of Resident Evil 2 includes all the gameplay modes from both the US and Japanese versions of the PlayStation game, and there are enough extras to satisfy you if you still want more once the lengthy “original” mode draws to a close. The PC version also has an exclusive new feature, an art and model gallery that lets you see how the designs evolved. It’s not vital by any means, but it’s a nice touch.
The music is appropriately creepy, with sad piano music floating in and out of the game. The other sound effects don’t fare as well. The groaning of zombies is creepy at first, but over time it becomes tedious and repetitive. The voice-overs are terrible, www.muhammadniaz.net though they seem appropriate in the B-movie setting.
Resident Evil 2′s origin as a PlayStation game is apparent. The method by which you save games will infuriate PC purists, as it is not only sporadic, but requires an item of which there are a limited number. This is part of the game’s design, though, and it would lose much of its suspense without it. But if such conventions annoy you, consider yourself warned. If you can brave its shortcomings, however, Resident Evil 2 is good, scary fun.

The first level is a tutorial level where you learn to maneuver your vehicle (using the keyboard cursor keys) to move around a maze like structure. The controls are a little twitchy; making it quite hard to control the turning of your vehicles, but it does get easier with a little practice. This is important as in later levels you have to maneuver around lots of objects. You’ll also be given the opportunity to try out the various weapons that you carry on yourvehicle. The top mounted weapon is controlled by the movement of the mouse; the mouse pointer becomes the firing reticule and the fire button is the left mouse button; grenades can be thrown by using the right mouse button and the super weapon by using the space bar. www.muhammadniaz.net All key bindings can be changed to keys more comfortable to the individual by going into the options menu via the main menu. Your main weapon can be changed from the default mini gun to a laser and pulse cannon using the mouse scroll wheel. You’ll find each level has a boss stage at the end of the level.
The basic set up of the game play is to destroy a building that holds the force field generators, then go collect theenergy sphere that was initially protected by the force field. As soon as you collect the sphere you are attacked by hordes of aliens. As you progress the levels get steadily harder.
You’ll find several bonuses in game. You need to pick these up quickly as they disappear within around 20 to 30 seconds. These include the following:

It may not be the most realistic racing game ever created, but it certainly raises the bar for PC motorcycle racers.

You might expect Superbike World Championship to be just another arcade-style racer, a fun and flashy game with very little realism and nothing much in common with the sport it simulates, save the name. Fortunately for motorcycle enthusiasts, Superbike from EA Sports has a lot more going for it than a fancy 3D engine and a thumping soundtrack. Superb gameplay and a substantial dose of simulation style realism make this one of the best motorcycle games to hit PC screens in quite a while.
Superbike offers the same basic gameplay options you’ll find in any good racer. Both single races and championship seasons are available, and you have the choice of either action or simulation mode for each. Six additional game options (difficulty, weather conditions, and so on) let you tailor each race to your tastes and skill level. If you choose simulation mode, you can also adjust nine realism settings, including the use of real Superbike rules, computer-assisted acceleration, braking, and the occurrence of engine failures.
The game includes 12 Superbike tracks, including Phillip Island, Monza, and Laguna Seca. Each is well rendered with plenty of detail to create a reasonably realistic racing environment. Just about every track has at least one particularly memorable bend, twist, or curve – Laguna Seca’s trademark corkscrew turn, for example.
There are five bikes to choose from: Ducati 916, Honda RC 45, Kawasaki ZX7R, Yamaha YZF, and Suzuki GSXR. Each is evenly matched but offers a slight variation in instrumentation, engine noise, and color scheme (for the aesthetically minded gamers among you). In simulation mode, you can modify your bike’s chassis (rake and trail), transmission (gearbox sprocket, rear-wheel sprocket, gear ratios), suspension, and tires for optimum performance. There’s even a nifty telemetry analysis tool that lets you see how your bike performed in a particular race, so you can make the necessary adjustments. As with most racing games that let you modify your vehicle’s setup, it’s best to leave things alone unless you know what you’re doing.

Simulation mode gives you more options but also ups the challenge level quite a bit. Single races involve an entire racing weekend, including practice, two rounds of qualification, and two official races. Gameplay itself can be quite challenging, especially if you’ve let your reflexes and driving skills go to mush with pure arcade racers like Moto Racer 2 or Redline Racer. Superbike has more in common with UbiSoft’s F1 Racing Simulation and Papyrus’ Grand Prix Legends than with the arcade crowd, so be prepared to crash (and lose) often in the early going. Thankfully, the game lets you practice at your own pace and also lets you scale the difficulty to fit just about any level of driving skill. Another bonus: Even if you do wipe out a lot, Superbike offers some spectacular crash animations, as your bike skips along the ground with sparks flying, and your driver tumbles along behind. You can even choose to walk your bike back onto the course manually if you want (the default setting just plops you back on your bike at the point of the crash.

There’s just enough that’s better in the CS4 updates to Photoshop and Photoshop Extended most notably, usability improvements for core features that many people will find themselves sighing, biting the bullet, and upgrading. If you work with video or 3D, or want to update your Creative Suite to CS4 for other reasons, this is a no brainer; for the rest of us, there’s little you can do with CS4 that you couldn’t do with CS3, and the latter seems a bit faster and more memory efficient in some respects.

The Web abounds with complaints about Adobe’s installer and updater, and I think most are quite justified. Every Windows application installer suggests you close any running applications, but you can usually ignore it and 99 percent of the time everything works out fine. Adobe forces you to close your browser and all Microsoft Office applications, because many of the programs in the suite primarily Acrobat spread octopus like tentacles throughout your working environment. That’s pretty appalling in and of itself, but in addition to wasting a large chunk of time installing, you can’t do anything else but play Solitaire while it’s happening. And as before with the updater, you’ll get to relive this delightful close your apps or else experience on a regular basis. Even as I type it’s stopped dead waiting for me to close Firefox. Plus, the installation “progress” bar bears no relation to reality whatsoever, with its two steps forward and one step back movement. Over and over again. All of this adds up to a one-point demerit for Adobe on its Setup and Interface rating.

Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended users will benefit more immediately from these underlying changes than Standard users. For the latter, OpenGL support primarily manifests itself as some whizzy screen zooming and rotation tools that demo well but likely won’t get used much. However, Adobe has greatly improved Extended’s 3D support. It now offers most of the essential render settings and view controls, plus the ability to createprimitives (and extend the library of primitives), necessary to work with 3D models. You edit and paint on textures simply by double-clicking on them in the Layers palette, then see your changes applied when you toggle back to the model; not quite real-time, interactive painting, but close enough for now. And now there’s basic keyframe animation for 3D scenes. Still there’s room for improvement: it needs better lighting handling and the ability to tile and more easily position textures, and several aspects of the interface, like the Rendering options, are still far too dialog driven. And Photoshop gets very slow when you load (or generate via the Mesh from grayscale command) relatively complex models with tens of thousands of polygons.
